The treasure of the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara

Gleaning between history and legend, one of the most sought-after treasures in Italy is undoubtedly the mysterious diamond of Ferrara.

Located in the Diamanti Palace, a Renaissance-style building paved with enigmatic pyramids in white and pink marble (called "ashlars") that adorn the external walls, the structure - which today houses the famous Banksy exhibition - owes its name to the alleged presence within its walls of a real diamond.

Continues...

It is a legend that almost all the people of Ferrara know in broad terms because told by grandparents or heard by teachers during the inevitable school trip to the palace. But, according to distinguished scholars of the Este family, the history of the diamond could also have a foundation of truth.

The building, now home to museums, houses on the main floor the Pinacoteca Nazionale and on the ground floor the exhibition space where the renowned exhibitions organized by Ferrara Arte are held.

Built in the Quadrivio degli Angeli and designed in 1492 by the architect Biagio Rossetti on behalf of Sigismondo d'Este, brother of Duke Ercole I d'Este, it seems that the latter wanted to insert the diamond of his crown inside one of the pyramids.

Impossible to find it, today, since no one has ever been able to count them but it seems, however, that their number is between 8,500 and 12,000. At the time of construction, however, in addition to Ercole I d'Este, the location of the precious jewel was also known by the master builder.

I'll tell you more...

The duke, uncertain of his loyalty, summoned him in great secrecy and had his tongue cut off, as well as blinding him. It also seems that Ercole d'Este later rewarded the family of the master builder of the wrong suffered with a fair sum in gold, but only in this way could the secret have remained guarded.

A brutal method, but which evidently has borne fruit since, despite the many clues, no one to date has ever found the precious diamond.

On the story of the diamond of Ferrara, finally, there is also a rich anecdote that concerns the spiritual world and esoteric disciplines.
In fact, it seems that the real diamond was not placed at random, but in a very specific point so that it could concentrate certain telluric energies directly inside the building, where it seems that intense sessions were held on astrology and alchemy with particularly renowned scholars of that era.
