Two collectors of war memorabilia find an artillery shell in Lonato

Sometimes the earth returns ancient memories, reopening pages of our history that seemed definitively archived.

And instead, almost 80 years later, from the subsoil of Lonato, in the province of Brescia, an artillery shell popped up which, the first historiographical surveys, would date back to the Second World War, probably - month plus month less - around 1942.

The shell - defined as "very dangerous" because it is still able to explode - was found, just before Christmas, in the shooting range of Esenta by two local history enthusiasts who, equipped with metal detectors, were sweeping the ground around the Brescia hamlet in search of war finds to collect. Handled by inexperienced hands, the anti-tank shell could have caused very serious damage.

For Militaria research

For this reason, the shell was first secured by the artificers of the tenth Regiment of the Guastatori Engineers of Cremona and then blown up in an area near the Trap Concaverde sports facility.

But what was the origin of this Italian artillery artifact of the caliber of 75 millimeters?

A hypothesis, supported by an old document preserved in the municipal archive, was formulated by Morando Perini, former mayor and president of the Fanti di Lonato: "I was carrying out a research on the presence of the Lancers of Novara in 1942 on the territory of Lonato - he explained - and I accidentally came across a document dated June 18, 1942 with which the Military Authority warned that 3 days before an anti-tank shell from the Esenta shooting range had gone astray in the area of explosion in the direction of Lonato ".

Be very careful

In case of suspicion of discovery of a war ordnance, the search must be immediately suspended WITHOUT EXTRACTING the object from the ground and the authorities must be notified immediately.
